Did you know that almost 1/3 of food is wasted annually? Food is discarded because of e.g. missing sell by dates and overbuying items. By minimising food waste, not only are you saving the environment but your wallet too!

Kitsain is the answer for food waste prevention. It is a mobile application designed for easy household grocery management. Through a pantry section, user can track their inventory and food item usage. Shopping lists section connected to Google tasks makes daily shopping easier. Items can be added to the inventory or lists using a scanner. In pantry history, users can see monthly statistics item usage and the relation of discarded items to the total of items.

Kitsain was first developed as a web application by another student team and our team of six turned it into an android mobile application in spring 2023. Development was done in Flutter, Figma and Realm. Development was implemented with agile approach and project management was handled in Jira and Confluence, communication through email, Slack and Discord. Process also included some user feedback as well and the project ended with a quality assurance week that included technical and user testing.

I worked on this project as the UX/UI lead designer. Enhancing the UI from the first MVP was one of the two main goals of our project. I developed Kitsain branding and designed the UI in tandem with the developers, utilising Material UI library in creating a component library and visual identity. We had a weekly UX meeting remotely with the customer and utilised Slack and Figma comments to communicate throughout the project. The UI received praise for unconventional and high quality visuals. The customer was also pleased with the UI development process.

Additionally, as part of this project, I was in charge of planning and facilitating a series of workshops with Aalto University student team. They were working with Kitsain to scope possible commercialisation ideas for future development. Our workshops mainly focused on service design and branding.
