Green Passport for Software is a concept draft of a subscription service aimed to help in sustainable software procurement and development. The service is intended to be used alongside calculations and appropriate legislative limits on the carbon footprint of software products. The project was executed by an international team of four under the facilitation of start up hub Demola during fall 2024.
In this project, I served as the UX/UI and service designer. I led the service concept development and was responsible for the UI sketches. UI sketches were compiled using Miro's elements to lower the threshold for the other team members to collaborate in the design process. Additionally I handled much of the project management such as project timeline and task management. I also represented our team in several Demola pitch events. Due to my efforts our concept was easier to deliver to different stakeholders and the visualisations enabled a more engaging experience in the pitch events. Thanks to my experience in Green ICT, we were able to aim for a more in depth concept that received praise for its potential for industry application. Our project was also successful enough to be selected to be featured in the finale event, held at Business Finland in Helsinki.
Green Passport for Software benchmarks similar concepts from EU's digital product passport as well as accessibility auditing tools in the industry. It aims to level the playing field between different stakeholders in software commission, bringing abstract, difficult sustainability topics to a more approachable level. It helps developers to include greener practices to their workflows and clients to set relevant sustainability criteria to their procurement plans, resulting in concrete sustainability related data and more efficient, greener digital services. Green Passport for Software also introduces a certificate stamp, similar to Finnish Avainlippu, so that providers can enable trust to the public using their services.
